The U-Wing heavy assault starfighter.

Typically piloted by drones, the U-Wing is composed of a pilot section, which contains the rotating steering cabin and the hyperdrive engine, and the gun section, which contains a heavy B67-matter acceleration cannon and speed-loading mechanism. 
Both sections and the connector are fitted with sub-light steering engines which, combined with the rotating cockpit, allow the pilot to execute surprisingly elaborate maneuvres after falling out of hyperspace - a necessity given the U-Wing's 100% forward-oriented weaponry and wide turning angle.

In combat, flights of U-Wings are launched at a target from a minimum distance of one lightyear, opening surprise fire the instant they drop out of hyperspace.
The connector was always an exploitable weakness of the design, being vulnerable to enemy fire and tearing due to acceleration strain. Fortunately, this was a calculated risk; the pilot could easily activate the hyperdrive and achieve escape velocity before they were in danger of being caught in the explosion of the cannon section.

Advances in hyperspace tracking and shield technology steadily reduced the success rate of this type of assault, but the U-Wing' heavy assault starfighter's design became the basis for a whole new generation of starfighters.
